Measuring

Creating hats is all about circle and ovals. First you need to find the circumference of your head. For standard size hats you should do this by placing the measuring tape where the hat should lay when place upon your head. If you are looking to create a miniature hat to pin on top of your head or snood, then this will need to be modified at your discretion as to the size of hat you are creating.

Once you have your measurement ADD and extra 1/4 inch to the measurement for comfort and fit. Next DIVIDE the overall measurement (circumference of your head plus the extra comfort) by 3.14. This will give you the diameter of the inside of the brim. Now, DIVIDE the diameter by two to find the radius.

The Crown

Depending on the size of the Crown you wish to have you can add an additional 8 inches to the radius. Larger Crowns can go even more. Just note the larger the Crown is the more wider the top of the Crown will be and the more pleating you will need to gather to attach it to the Brim.

On a blank sheet of pattern paper, place a tack with a string measuring the radius and additional inches in the overall size of the Crown you want to create in the center of your circle. Trace the circle around the center point holding the string taught.

The Brim

Using a tack and string measuring the distance of the radius, draw a circular line around the center point. To adjust for proper shape, make minor adjustments bring the sides of the Hat Brim by by 1/4 inch and extending the front and back of the Brim by 1/2 inch creating an oval shape. Recheck the oval with the tape to check the circumference measurement is still accurate. Adjust as needed. This is the the line on the brim where the Brim should meet the Crown.

Measure 1/2 inch and draw a line around the INSIDE of the Crown/Brim Line to create the Tab Line. This will be used to create the Tabs that will attach the Brim to the Crown.

To determine the size of the brim measure and draw a line 2 1/2 inches on the OUTSIDE of the Crown/Brim Line to find the Outer Edge of the Brim.

Cutting

After tracing the pattern for the Crown and the Brim on SEPARATE piece of the FACING, LINING and INTERFACING, cut out the pieces. Cut the Crown out around the outer edge of the circle. Cut the Brim out on the Tab Line and the Outer Edge.

Next make little triangular cuts from the Tab Line in to the Crown/Brim Line to create little tabs.
